1:1 Updates as of March 7th

Updates related to our district’s plan to move to 1:1, providing a Chromebook to all 3rd grade thru 12th grade students for the 17-18 school year.

  1. 1:1 Checklist for each school.
The Tech Department has created a checklist that is specific for each school that has been shared with each school administrator.  It provides schools with a list of 15 items to consider as they prepare for assigning devices to students.  If you’d like to be a part of your school’s planning related to 1:1, please contact your building administration.
  2. Case selections have started
We’ve started collecting cases/protective options for the devices from vendors.  In addition, we’ve started sharing the options with both parent groups and student groups, collecting their feedback and preferences.  If your school has a student group and/or parent group that would like to provide feedback on the cases, please contact Brian Abeling, abelingb@wdmcs.org and he can arrange to meet with your group.
  3. New web filtering testing
We’ve begun testing out the new software that will provide web filtering for the 1:1 chromebooks.  If testing proceeds as planned, we are hoping to provide parent access to the web filtering this spring for a select test group of parents.
  4. Logistics
The district tech team has continued with their logistics planning related to removing the chromebooks from their carts and moving them to cases for students.  The actual moving of equipment out of carts won’t begin until after summer starts.
  5. Training
Here’s a quick overview of upcoming training:
    a. Week of April 10th:  Face to face training is planned for all teacher leader positions.
    b. April 28th:  Some schools have selected to use this day for building based introductory Canvas training through their teacher leaders.
    c. June 5th -Some schools are also looking at optional canvas training on the last contract day through their teacher leaders.
    d. Online courses available: Canvas also provides instructor-led and recorded training options.
    e. Summer training options:  The district is also working on study group and staff development course options that would be available this summer.

1:1 details by school

As we move towards 1:1, what exactly happens at each school?  Not just the chromebooks – but what happens to other tech resources?  What stays and what goes?

Indian Hills

This spring (2017), Indian Hills will receive new desktop computers and ceiling mounted projectors.  The only exception will be the Consumer Ed computer lab, the existing desktops will remain for this lab until the end of the school year and will be removed this summer.

IH will continue to have one open desktop lab and one tech ed lab.

Windows Laptops Cart:  Next time they are replaced, only 1 windows laptop cart will be provided, all others will be removed at that time.

All Chromebook carts will be dismantled, as the chromebooks are needed for students.  The carts will remain at the school, if the school desires them or they can contact the warehouse for assistance with removal.

Chromebooks that will be provided…

334 Acers for 7th graders

311 Lenovo N21s for 8th graders

In future years, our goal will be to replace all IH Chromebooks at once, so they are the same exact model – but for the start, we will have one model per grade level.

Stilwell

Two desktop computer labs have already been removed from Stilwell.  At this time, no additional labs will be removed, they will continue to have one open lab and one tech ed lab.

Windows Laptops Cart:  Next time they are replaced, only 1 windows laptop cart will be provided, all others will be removed.

All Chromebook carts will be dismantled, as the chromebooks are needed for students.  The carts will remain at the school, if the school desires them or they can contact the warehouse for assistance with removal.

Chromebooks that will be provided….

351 Acers for 7th graders

337 Lenovo N21s for 8th graders

In future years, our goal will be to replace all ST Chromebooks at once, so they are the same exact model – but for the start, we will have one model per grade level.

VSW

Remove 3  desktop computer labs  (currently open labs available to anyone)   The labs will be removed when the new desktop computers are replaced within the school building –  we are anticipating this will happen in the summer of 2017 when we also replace ceiling mounted projectors.

All Chromebook carts will be dismantled, as the chromebooks are needed for students.  The carts will remain at the school, if the school desires them or they can contact the warehouse for assistance with removal.

Windows Laptop Carts:  At next replacement cycle, only one windows laptop cart will be replaced.

Chromebooks that will be provided….

219  Lenovo N21s for New Tech Students

524 Acers for remaining students

In future years, our goal will be to replace all VSW Chromebooks at once, so they are the same exact model – but for the start, we will have one model per grade level.

WCC

WCC has one chromebook cart, which will be dismantled, as the chromebooks are needed for students.  The cart will remain at the school, if the school needs it for other purposes or they can contact the warehouse for assistance with removal.

Chromebooks that will be provided…

170 total chromebooks, likely to be mixture of Acers and Lenovo’s

In future years, our goal will be to replace all WCC Chromebooks at once, so they are the same exact model – but for the start there will be a mixture of models at WCC.

Valley High School

When new desktop computers are purchased for Valley, we will not replace six (6) open labs (desktop computer spaces that are available to anyone). All other labs will remain.  In fact, all specialized labs for CTE, art, etc, will always stay, we have no plans to remove or alter their labs as they need are needed for specialized software.

We anticipate replacing classroom desktops and ceiling mounted projectors during the summer of 2018, so the open labs will remain available for next year.  However, if the school wants any of the labs removed, they can request it and we’ll remove it ahead of time –  otherwise, the plan is to allow the labs and the 1:1 chromebooks to overlap for one school year to help out with the transition.

All Chromebook carts will be dismantled this summer, as the chromebooks are needed for students.  The carts will remain at the school, if the school desires them or they can contact the warehouse for assistance with removal.

Windows laptop carts: At next replacement cycle for laptops, only one windows laptop cart will be replaced, all others will be removed.

In August of 2017, VHS will receive 2,100 new Chromebooks (model has not been determined). Because students are mixed from various grade levels, we would like to ensure that all students have the same equipment and same power adapter.

What type of case will the 2,100 chromebooks come with?  We don’t know yet – but we are gathering case examples and would like to involve staff and students and ask for their help in narrowing down the selection.  If you’re having a hard time visualizing the case options: let’s consider your existing staff laptop – we gave you a carry case with it.  Should the student case be just like it?  Or a small carry case like our junior high students have now?  Or should it be just a shell that wraps around the device (much like a standard phone case fits around a phone). Or should we just provide a backpack that is specific for the device?  Or provide nothing at all?

Crestview

There are no changes for Crestview, as they are already 1:1 with chromebooks for 3rd grade thru 6th grade.  They will keep their one desktop lab and their one windows laptop cart.  Again, no changes for Crestview.

Clive

There are no changes for Clive, as they are already 1:1 with chromebooks for 3rd grade thru 6th grade.  They will keep their one desktop lab and their one windows laptop cart.  Again, no changes for Clive.

Crossroads Park
All Chromebook carts will be dismantled this summer, as the chromebooks are needed for students.  The carts will remain at the school, if the school desires them or they can contact the warehouse for assistance with removal.

At grades 3 thru 6,  4 desktop computers per classroom will eventually be removed. We have not determined if the 4 desktop computers will be removed this summer or later into next fall, but we know that when each building receives new desktops, we will only be purchasing only one desktop for each 3rd grade thru 6th grade classroom.

Windows laptop carts: At next replacement cycle, only one windows laptop cart will be replaced.

At this time, the desktop computer lab will remain.  The desktop lab has been utilized for various online assessments, some of which are not compatible with chromebooks.

We will be providing Lenovo N21 or N22 chromebooks for grades 3 thru 6.  We will ensure that each grade level will have the same exact model, but we will not have enough of the same models to ensure the exact model across the entire school.  In future years, our goal will be to replace all Chromebooks at each elementary so they are the same exact model – but for the start, we will have two models, most likely one model for grades 3 and 4, and another model for grades 5 and 6.

Will students have a carry case or something to protect the chromebook?  Yes, we will provide some type of protective case, although the exact model hasn’t been determined.  In fact, we are collecting examples from companies and if the plan is approved, we will send samples out to schools and ask for staff and student input.

What about PreK thru 2nd grade?  At this time, nothing will be removed from their rooms. They will continue to have access to everything they currently have.

Will we evaluate adding 1:1 chromebooks for PreK thru 2nd grade?  Yes, after we’ve rolled out 3rd thru12th.

Jordan Creek

All Chromebook carts will be dismantled this summer, as the chromebooks are needed for students.  The carts will remain at the school, if the school desires them or they can contact the warehouse for assistance with removal.

At grades 3 thru 6,  4 desktop computers per classroom will eventually be removed. We have not determined if the 4 desktop computers will be removed this summer or later into next fall.  In other schools, we’ll be taking the 4 desktops per room out when they receive new desktops. However, Jordan Creek has already received the new desktops

Does this mean that the 4 per room can be moved to other classrooms?
No.  It means that when we come to remove the 4 per room at grades 3 thru 6, we will be sending them to other buildings as this is needed to reduce our costs, which enables us to move forward with 1:1 chromebooks.

Windows laptop carts: At next replacement cycle, only one windows laptop cart will be replaced.

At this time, the desktop computer lab will remain.  The desktop lab has been utilized for various online assessments, some of which are not compatible with chromebooks.
